Kythera Connections
Maria Chlentzos Alfieris & Yiannis Giorgos Alfieris Yiannis was born in the town of Potamos on the island of Kythera in Greece, on Feb. 28, 1883. Maria was born in the nearby village of Christoforianika on Sept. 20, 1883. They immigrated to Alexandria, Egypt where they were married in June of 1903. At the age of 23, Yiannis left Alexandria and arrived in the USA on Oct. 6, 1906 to start a new life. Maria followed a year later with their two small children; Gus, and Lola. Yiannis and Maria settled in Oakland, California. They had five more children; Harry, Alice, Florence, Evangeline and Milton. Yiannis Alfieris died on December 6, 1966 at the age of 83. Maria passed away on March 29, 1968 at the age of 85. As of July 2007, 104 descendants of Yiannis and Maria reside in the United States, mostly in California.
